What You Don’t Know Could Kill You – A Deep Dive into the Drug Epidemic
Presenters: Trevor Johnson, Ottawa County DART and Drug Task Force
Tami Matthews, SVN Membership and Outreach Coordinator

In this workshop, you will gain valuable tools and skills to help you navigate situations involving drugs, individuals with active addiction, and potential drug emergencies. By improving your perspective, you can become a part of the solution within your agency, community, and beyond. Learn from an expert on the epidemic's front lines who will teach you an innovative approach to responding to opioid emergencies and working in the drug world. You will receive education on responding to overdose emergencies and working effectively with the families involved. Additionally, you will learn how to administer Narcan and understand how you can truly make a difference in someone's road to recovery.

Born and raised in Port Clinton, Ohio, Drug Task Force Agent Trevor Johnson has extensive experience as a first responder. He graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Criminal Justice Degree. Trevor became a Firefighter in 2001 and a Lieutenant in 2012. He is also an EMT-B, Fire Instructor, SWAT Medic, and a member of the Ottawa County DART team. In late 2017, Ottawa County added a new tool to help people battling addiction. The County Prosecutor's Office launched its Drug Addiction Response Team, a collaborative program involving law enforcement, mental health providers, drug addiction treatment experts, and other medical providers. At that time, Trevor was hired to oversee the DART program. He has been married for 14 years and is the proud father of three children who keep him very busy with all their activities. Trevor’s hidden talents include playing the guitar, accordion, and ukulele as well as beekeeping.

Tami Matthews, Membership and Outreach Coordinator joined the SVN staff in March 2023. Prior to that, she spent 5 years working at Joyful Connections, an SVN member agency, as a Visitation Monitor, Program Manager, and Executive Director. While Tami was with Joyful Connections she worked closely with the Staff, Board of Directors, Juvenile Court, Domestic Relations Court, Child Protective Services, and numerous other Community Partners. She has overseen the physical move to a larger facility, the addition of an outside play area, the transition from handwritten reports to computerized narratives, and the addition of one-on-one Parent Coaching utilizing Nurturing Parenting and the 24:7 Dad Fatherhood Program. With an Elementary Education degree from Wittenberg University and a Masters in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University, Tami has also been a classroom teacher, owned her own catering business, and was involved in non-profit fundraising and alumni relations. Tami lives in Oak Harbor, Ohio (on the shores of Lake Erie) with her husband and their two fur babies – Shotzie (a Chiweenie) and Tiny (the crazy cat). She and Brent have 4 adult children, 3 grandchildren, and 5 grandcats. Tami serves on the Ottawa County Humane Society, and the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund Council, and in her spare time likes to read, boat, and “glamp”.

Protecting our Clients and Ourselves from Cyber Stalking
Steven Bradley, Our Family Wizard

During this presentation, we will explore many facets of technology including the risks associated with Social Media, location-based services, call and text spoofing, online dating, tracking software, and more; all of which are used on a daily basis. We will also unpack how this manifests during Parenting Time/Supervised Visitation. The attendees will not only see demonstrations as to how individuals are being “cyber-stalked” but how vulnerable we all can be while operating in an online space. The class will begin with a quick overview of why we need to learn how to work with technology as professionals. It will continue with a reminder of both criminal and civil legal statutes that can apply to these acts. The session will explore the act of “Spoofing” with a live demonstration of how it can impact Family Law cases. The conversation will then turn toward devices such as Bluetooth and will be shown the common ways these devices are hacked and how to prevent themselves from being a victim of such hacks. Then as a group, we will explore the realm of Social Media, and the effects that it can have on a case. Attendees will learn simple techniques to be able to validate and use social media posts and messages in their cases. Being that Social media is the number one activity online today, there is a very good chance that some form of social media will show up in part of their case. The session will also discuss ways to protect ourselves from the risks we may personally experience due to our presence on the web and social media. Attendees will learn how this is done and strategies for removing personal information from the internet and remaining safe online. Non-technical language will be used throughout the presentation.

With an extensive law enforcement career focusing on investigating crimes against persons, specializing in sex crimes, child abuse, domestic violence, and crimes against the elderly, Steven Bradley was recruited by the FBI to investigate technology and cyber-related crimes. After graduating from the FBI Academy with honors, he began combating many types of technology crimes including child pornography, cyberstalking, financial exploitation, and apprehending child predators. Later in his career, Steve began working with State Coalitions, and local domestic violence/sexual assault centers on bridging the gaps between law enforcement and community partners to better support survivors and victims.  It was there, that Steven led many group discussions and training on proper investigative techniques and working together for offender accountability.  Now as part of the Our Family Wizard professional team, Steven further promotes the empowerment and healthy communication between separated and divorced parents via technology.  Steven is nationally recognized as an expert on law enforcement’s response to intimate partner violence, technology forensics, and stalking/cyberstalking. As an International Trainer for 25 years, Steven is known for his real-world practical education and has provided training throughout the globe on many related topics.

Harm Reduction vs Zero Tolerance
Presenters TBA

When making decisions from intervention to termination of services, what model do you use? Do you have a zero-tolerance policy in place that holds everyone accountable, you can easily monitor the actions of each person and remove any person that is not following the rules. Or do you use a harm reduction method that uses policies and practices that aim to reduce the negative consequences associated with behaviours that are typically considered high risk? Either answer may be correct, but join us while we take a deeper dive into these modalities to determine best practices for meeting the needs within our communities while keeping the families we serve, and ourselves, safe.

Lateral Kindness: A Response to Lateral Violence & Determining the Kindness from Within
Cat Maracle, Mohawk College

Lateral Kindness is in response to lateral violence: any type of negative action that is placed upon others in a group (professionally, culturally, etc.). Lateral Kindness is about determining the kindness within, how that can be implemented into your daily life, and how it impacts your work environment as well. It is about sharing more acts of kindness so that one day, there will be a generation that will no longer be impacted by lateral violence.

Cat Maracle is Bearfoot Onondaga, Wolf Clan from Six Nations of the Grand River. She finished top of her class in Leadership in Community Engagement from McMaster University Continuing Education and has a certificate in Aboriginal Adult Education from Brock University. Cat's main role in the community is Community Mobilizer for City School by Mohawk College and is also faculty for a City School course entitled Indigenous College 101, a college preparation course that focuses on wholistic well-being through Indigenous ways of knowing and being while incorporating academic content. During her time at Brock University, Cat's main interest was in Lateral Kindness curriculum development, and she continues to share her knowledge on Lateral Kindness through art-based workshops.

Tough Calls for Tough Decisions
Moderators TBA

This session will introduce several thought-provoking scenarios that face providers of Parenting Time/Supervised Visitation on an almost daily basis. Typically there are no singular solutions to the decisions we make, so processing with peers is intended to help us have more perspectives and ideas to help us keep families safe. Attendees can also share their own challenging situations for the group to process.
