PART THREE: From Trauma to Transcendence: Embracing Post-Traumatic Growth

Traumatic experiences, particularly multiple experiences throughout a lifetime, can result in various behavioral health problems beyond and including post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, depression, anxiety problems, childhood behavioral disorders, psychosis, and some personality disorder diagnoses are all common traumatic responses. In other words, people who have experienced trauma(s) may respond to the experience(s) differently and are often difficult to work with. There may be no visible signs or dramatic responses ranging from irritability, sudden mood swings, anxiety, anger, denial, fear, inability to articulate or remember- they may be illogical and/or unable to practice good hygiene. They may not be able to remember what you told them or to follow even the most basic of instructions.
A trauma-informed response emphasizes creating services and programs that are sensitive and directly responsive to the trauma many people experience after a violent crime and/or a high-stress experience. While trauma-informed care is the field standard of care, many people cannot turn the corner from intellectually embracing trauma-informed care to actualizing and being trauma-informed. We must also discuss what it means to help ourselves and those we serve to reach post-traumatic growth. It is not enough to meet our clients in their trauma, we must also serve as map makers on the healing path. Taking on a healing-center response helps more clients to transcend trauma. This presentation will discuss setting a trauma-informed foundation while providing healing- centered services. If we learn how to reach post-traumatic growth, we weave in protective factor factors along the path of healing that will serve our clients in the long term.
