PART TWO: Heart Betrayed: The Dynamics of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC)

Human trafficking is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world because people can be sold repeatedly and for high profit. Every day in every town across the country, people of all ages are exploited- but commonly, the victims are children and youth. For professionals who are charged with effectively intervening in cases of child harm, by most meaningful metrics, there is very little success in CSEC for various reasons. This is a challenging population to identify and even harder to intervene. The training workshop is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues surrounding CSEC. This course aims to equip professionals and advocates working in various sectors with the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to respond to CSEC effectively. Through an in-depth exploration of the dynamics, root causes, impact, and intervention approaches, participants will gain valuable insights into this critical issue. Most victims of CSEC experience multiple forms of abuse.

They are often in some form of relationship with their trafficker- usually familial. Professionals who work within the field of child abuse or with the domestic abuse population may have opportunities to intervene. This complicates the dynamic, and we often fail to see beyond the “Domestic Violence” designation. This training seeks to explore this essential set of relationships and to expand our lens to improve our response. On average, a victim of human sex trafficking is raped over 9,000 times in their lifespan. Most, if not all, of them also experience strangulation, which can have a long-term impact and increase the chance of homicide. We have an ethical responsibility to improve our response. We will discuss human-centric methodologies: being trauma-informed and healing-inspired/ organized. We will assert that we have a responsibility to actively try to transform the system, improve our intervention, and move into prevention.
